2008 Olympic Concert Tour in Beijing

Congratulations to the city of Beijing for the honor of hosting the 2008 Summer Olympic Games! We are offering a 12-day Olympic concert tour, which will include visits to several landmarks in Beijing, such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. This tour will also include an acrobatic performance as well as a Peking Roast Duck banquet. Below are some tour highlights:

  • Day 1: U.S.A.-Beijing.
    • Depart from one of the West Coast gateway cities where your tour representative will help you board the flight to Beijing.
  • Day 2: Beijing.
    • You will arrive at Beijing International Airport in the evening, and will be met by our local guide for hotel transfer.
  • Days 3: Beijing.
    • Preparation for the concert.
  • Day 4: Beijing.
    • The concert will take place on the fourth day of the tour.
  • Days 5-7: Beijing.
    • Visit the Summer Palace, the Palace Museum (commonly known as the Forbidden City), the Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall, and the Ming Tombs.
    • Enjoy the acrobatic show and the Peking Roast Duck banquet.
  • Day 8: Beijing-Shanghai-Hangzhou.
    • Take a morning flight to Shanghai, China’s largest metropolis with a population of 16 millions. Then travel by coach to Hangzhou and enjoy some free time. Stay overnight in Hangzhou.
  • Day 9: Hangzhou, “Paradise on Earth.”
    • Cruise on the West Lake with stops at a teahouse and jewel-like pagodas. Visit the Lingyin Temple that houses an 82-feet Buddha carved from camphor wood. Stay overnight in Hangzhou.
  • Day 10: Hangzhou-Shanghai.
    • We will drive to Shanghai in the morning. Stroll along the Huangpu River Bund, China’s most famous waterfront stretching around one mile along the Huangpu River. Visit the Shanghai Museum. Stay overnight in Shanghai.
  • Day 11: Shanghai-Suzhou-Shanghai.
    • We will travel by coach to Suzhou, the city of gardens and waterways. Visit the Panmen Scenic Area, the Garden of Master Net, and a Silk-weaving workshop in Suzhou. We will drive back to Shanghai in the evening. Stay overnight in Shanghai.
  • Day 12: Shanghai-U.S.A.
    • Enjoy some leisure time for shopping. Board your return flight to the U.S. in the afternoon.

Tour Highlights

The 2008 Olympic Beijing Tour Youth Orchestra‘s 2008 summer concert tour will be highlighted by performances in Los Angeles, Beijing, Shanghai.. Artists will see the Forbidden City and The Great Wall,the vitality of Shanghai and have the opportunity to meet and play with many other young artists in China.

On this tour you‘ll meet people from around the country and around the world, while building your musical skills at the same time. The world is waiting, and is welcoming you!

Applications and Auditions

Applications for auditions for the 2008 Olympic Beijing Tour Youth Orchestra are available at the following location:

The orchestra is for students under the age of 16 who enjoy music and have a desire to visit China. Previous orchestral experience is helpful but not required. We encourage students to apply.


Applications, along with a $100 fee, must be received by September 1, 2007. Audition categories are Violin, Viola, Cello, Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Trumpet, Trombone, French horn, Harp, Percussion, boys' and girls' choir, contemporary dance, and some Chinese instruments (Er-hu ,Pi-pa, Bamboo flute, Zheng,). After processing of the application by the TPCAA, performers
may audition via audio tape or DVD as desired.

Musicians should be prepared to play a scale of their choice, an excerpt from a concerto or a sonata of their choice, and a selected part from one of the six pieces in the extensive EIO repertoire:

1. Qian Sirong, Chinese Folk Song: Jasmine Schubert, Rosamunde, Ballet Music Op. 26
2. Percy Grainger, Country Gardens
3. Mozart, The Magic Flute Overture, K. 620
4. Burden, Star Wars Medley
5. Claude-Michel Schönberg, Miss Saigon Medley
